Media and Education

Hi everyone! My name is Viktoria and I am an English major. My goal is to attend law school and become an attorney. I am also potentially considering teaching. My love for words and the art they weave has allowed me to embark in the world of literature, and I am excited to create and read our works. I also don’t mesh well with math, so that may be another reason.

In teaching, I think media technology should play at an equilibrium. There should be a balance where students can exercise their critical thinking skills and be able to formulate their own opinions and judgments without the help of artificial intelligence or other assistances. However, I would argue that media technology can be use to create learning or producing work product in an efficient way. For instance, if decades ago we didn’t have computers to type or printers , we would be stuck writing for many hours more and copying our works for longer. But now, we can produce more and even gather resources from the internet at a much faster rate. The only ineffective use of media technology I noticed is the use of AI which I think can really hamper our thinking skills, and , in my opinion, makes writing more vague. By using our own thought processes, we can produce more detailed and insightful work.

  1. Hi Viktoria!

I completely agree that technology should be brought into a class in an appropriate amount. I also think that technology like phones can be very distracting and put a block on what you can be experiencing. On the other hand, media technology can be an amazing way to keep the learning experience unique and entertaining. I personally have been in classes that have shown movies that have brought my learning experience to new levels. Media technology can include articles that I think can be a progressive way for students to understand a topic that might be a little difficult to understand. Also, when you brought up AI, it made me think about how AI has ruined people's original thoughts. AI has influenced the overall thought process of a person, but I also believe that AI can be taught in a classroom, enabling students to understand how to use it effectively and appropriately.

  2. Hello Viktoria,
In my own post about digital media, I brought up similar points as to why digital media is useful. In terms of speed and the access we have to information and writing at any given moment, the old ways of doing it are egregiously slower to what we have now. But like you said, there should be an equilibrium. If most students are adopting the ideas of others without much analysis, that doesn't lead to any new thing being said by them. Digital Media should be thought and used as a tool to enrich a student's work, but not to replace it. You mention AI, and my thoughts stay the same for that piece of technology. It should act as a tool, and for students in the future to not abuse it have to be educated on how to use it.

  3. Hi Viktoria!
I really enjoyed reading your post! I also am currently pursuing my law school goal! I am actually taking the LSAT this coming Friday! My main goal is to get into Pepperdine Law and then transfer to USC Law (Hopefully, i'm mainly assessing schools based on what I score on the LSAT). I wish you the best of luck, and if you need any LSAT study books, I have many that I can give you! I completely agree with you about there being some form of balance. Students should rely on critical thinking and I feel that media technology and being so accustomed to it can hinder critical thinking skills. I do not think there should be a classroom that is FULLY reliant on media technology, and if there is it should be done so in a way that still provokes critical thinking. Great Post!
